The shop can be found in the heart of Poros Town, at St George Square, where it has stood since 1890. Both the shop and church of St George were built on the site of the temple to Athena. In fact some of the temple stones were used for the construction. It was “the department store” of the time with some 21 employees. The front section was dedicated to a range of products from fabrics to everything for the bridal dowry, while at the back was the grocery department. The cellar, used for storage of wine and oil, literally became one of the first tavernas as the waiting pensioners took a refreshing drink. The shop has remained in the same family to the present day, still selling fine glass, tableware, cutlery and quality linnen (sheets, towels, blankets, pillows etc.). |
